PECOBA Activities

In the year 2000, PECOBA organized the MILLENNIUM GET-TOGETHER (entitled “Mil-e Nahi Hain Hum”) at Defence Services Officers Institute, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi on 13th August, 2000. The Function was attended by about four thousand alumni from 40 towns of India and 10 foreign countries. These alumni ranged from the passout year 1938 to the year 2000. Sh Nitish Kumar, an engineer from Patna Engineering College (1973 Passout), and the then Hon'ble Union Minister for Railways was the Chief Guest. Thirty five PEC Alumni who had passed out more than 50 years ago (ie passouts of 1950 or earlier) were honoured at this Function. A Cultural Programme and Dancing Competition was also organized whose chief attraction was the satirist Jaspal Bhatti (1978 Electrical) and his wife Savita Bhatti. About 200 Co-ordinators spread out in dozens of cities in India and abroad made this Mammoth Function possible.
In order to get deemed university status for PEC, PECOBA constituted a Revitalization Committee of PECOBA called PECREC in 2000. All its members were Delhi-based and comprised Prof BK Ahuja (1957M), Prof KK Pujara (1960M), Vijay Krishan Mehta (1961M), PC Gupta (1963C), HL Bajaj (1966E), Prof Arvind Krishan (1967C), Dr KK Aggarwal (1968E. He is VC of Indraprastha University, New Delhi) & Dr Rakesh Khurana (1968E) with Amarjit Singh Kohli (1964M) as the ex-officio Secretary. Many meetings of Committee were held & also its members met Govt of India Authorities such as Secy, HRD. Letters were written to PM, Dy PM, & HRD Minister. There was consistent and persistent follow up by PEC alumni Sh AK Goswami (IAS, 1964 Mech), Sh Jarnail Singh (IAS, 1970 Elect) and Sh Pawan Agarwal (IAS, 1983 Elect), all based in New Delhi then. PEC is now a deemed University.
PECOBA published its second Directory of PEC alumni in 2001 which was released by Hon'able Lt Gen JFR Jacob, the then Governor of Punjab, on 18th August, 2001 at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi in the presence of about 1000 PEC alumni. The Directory which runs into about 410 large pages lists the details of more than six thousand PEC alumni world-wide covering the passouts from the year 1930 till 2001 (includes Maclagan Engg College, Lahore upto 1947 & East Punjab Engg College, Roorkee upto 1953). A musical entertainment programme was also arranged in which PEC alumnus satirist Jaspal Bhatti, playback singers Bali Brahmbhatt, Shailendra Singh, Bhuppi, music director Anand Raj Anand, film actors Mukesh Khanna, Amar Upadhyay and many others from Mumbai presented a programme.
When PEC alumnus Kalpana Chawla died in the tragic accident of U.S. space shuttle Columbia on 1st Feb 2003, PECOBA organized a Condolence Meet at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi on Sunday, the 9th Feb 2003. Kalpana's professors & batchmates at PEC as also her school teachers & classmates at Tagore Balniketan School, Karnal attended the Function. Also about 30 close relatives of Kalpana, including her uncle (Chacha) attended the Function.Her father was in USA. The Function was attended by many delegates from US Embassy. A musical programme of homage to Kalpana Chawla with live singing, conceived and directed by PECOBA's Gen Secy Amarjit Singh Kohli, was presented. Ever since then, PECOBA has been organizing programmes of homage to Kalpana Chawla on 1st Feb every year. Five such programmes have been held, the first four in New Delhi & the last one in Tagore Balniketan School, Karnal on 1st Feb, 2008. In conjunction with Cultural Society Sakha, PECOBA has instituted Kalpana Chawla Excellence Awards which are given to outstanding women in various fields every year on 1st February.
